Coffey LabsMARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz., Oct. 5, 2026 — Coffey Labs, the maker of the inbuxa mail suite, ihasmail webmail, the ihasvpn WireGuard server and Cairn OBS log aggregation, today organized as Coffey Labs LLC, an Arizona limited liability company. The company now owns the open-source projects it builds and maintains.
The projects started as tools for infrastructure their author runs himself, published because a problem worth solving once is usually someone else’s too. Over time they became software other people run on their own servers. Forming the LLC gives that software a proper owner: a company that holds the code, the names and the domains, and stands behind them.
“When I started publishing these projects, I was solving my own problems. Then people started running them on their own servers, and that changes the responsibility,” said John Coffey, founder of Coffey Labs. “Software people depend on should have a company standing behind it. That’s what this is.”
What doesn’t change. Every project stays open source under its current license, copyleft by default. There is no paid tier and nothing is held back. The source stays on git.coffeylabs.org, mirrored to GitHub, and each product keeps its own site, docs and community. Coffey Labs sells nothing today.
Where it came from. Coffey Labs started in 2018 as LINUXexpert.org, a site of how-tos, study guides and essays that increasingly shipped software too. On August 30, 2026 the site was retired: the writing moved to jcoffey.dev and the projects to coffeylabs.org under the Coffey Labs name. The LLC followed five weeks later.
